We’ve had a number of people enquiring about improving their hearing aid battery performance.
Our audiologists give their top tips to help you get maximum life and performance from your batteries.
- Let the battery breathe for 3-5 minutes after removing the sticker tab and before inserting it in the hearing aid. This extra time allows the air to activate the chemicals inside the battery for better battery performance
- Wash your hands before handling the batteries. Oil and dirt from your hands can clog up the air holes in the battery and affect function.
- Open the battery door at night. This minimises battery drain and also helps moisture in the battery/battery door to evaporate. This also stops corrosion from building up on the battery to prevent damage to the hearing aid
- Remove batteries completely from the hearing aid if not using it for an extended period of time. This prevents corrosion to the battery and battery contacts in the hearing aid due to trapped moisture.
- Use a dehumidifier overnight to absorb moisture from the hearing aid. Removing moisture from the aid helps the battery power to be used more efficiently.
- Check expiry date on the batteries. Batteries with longer expiry dates are ‘fresher’ as they can drain slightly when sitting on the shelf for an extended period of time.
- Use older batteries first to get the most out of your batteries.
- Keep the sticker tabs on the batteries until you’re ready to use them. Once the sticker tab is removed, the air activates the battery and it starts to drain.
- Keep the battery in a cool, dry place, preferably at room temperature. Unused batteries in extreme temperatures can cause unnecessary battery drain and shorter life. Don’t store in the refrigerator or bathroom etc.
