We have created an easy way to remind you to how to maintain your hearing aids and your best hearing over the Christmas season.
All you have to remember is a BAUBLE...
B: Be well rested - The Christmas season is one of the busiest times of year - Christmas shopping for the family, lunch and dinner invitations from friends and clubs overflowing the inbox.
Stressful situations such as noisy shopping centres can make listening more exhausting than it might be at other times of year.
To help your hearing, ensure that you are well rested. If you find large noisy environments overwhelming, don't be afraid to take a moment to find somewhere less noisy to enjoy conversations. We have a great article on how to get used to wearing hearing aids that's worth reviewing, even if you've been wearing hearing aids for years.
A: Aids in good repair - Now is a great time to contact your audiologist if you haven't had your clean and check performed. Any adjustments can be performed to ensure you have your very best hearing.
If your hearing aids are more than five years old, you might consider purchasing new aids with features such as rechargeable power and Bluetooth streaming ability.
U: Use care when enjoying the great outdoors. Moisture is one of the great enemies of hearing aids. We recommend using use a dehumidifier or drying kit during these humid months to keep your aids in great working order. And while you're enjoying the great outdoors be mindful of your hearing aids. Don't go swimming with them! And if you take out your hearing aids to swim or play sports, ensure they go straight into their case instead of your pocket to ensure they're not lost
B: Batteries? Be sure to pick up an extra box to ensure you have enough to keep you going over the holiday season - and while you're there, make sure you have enough filters as well. If you have rechargeable hearing aids make sure you have a charging cable hand in your handbag or in the car, so it's ready to go if you are planning on doing some travel.
L: Listen actively. Use Christmas get-togethers as an opportunity to practice some active listening. This is particularly important in noisy family gatherings and other settings. The higher frequency voices of young children can also be difficult to follow without active listening techniques. We have some great articles here that will help make conversations easier to process.
E: Enjoy! These moments with friends and family are precious, so savour them!
