A Comprehensive Hearing Test and Hearing Aid Assessment vs a Basic Hearing Check

hearingconsultAt Value Hearing our team of audiologists believe in empowering you! After taking the time to carefully understand your needs and hearing issues, we provide you with a clear understanding of your hearing loss and the hearing solutions available to you. Most clinics offer a free screening appointment, which is a simple 15–30-minute hearing check. We offer a detailed and complete assessment of your hearing as well as a detailed and easy to understand explanation of your hearing results.

In your appointment, an audiologist will ask you about your ear and hearing history to ensure we have the greatest understanding of your hearing challenges, needs and goals. This allows you and our clinician to explore your hearing related medical history, the difficulties, and frustrations you are experiencing with your hearing as well as to gain an understanding of your lifestyle and the impact hearing loss has on your day to day activities and your overall quality of life. We also pay attention to important things, such as your dexterity, vision, memory, tinnitus, family support structure and even take the time to notice the kind of mobile phone you use to tailor our recommendations in a manner that will best suit you. We take the time to listen with the aim of understanding without judgement or rush.

Our audiologist will look in your ears to visually inspect your ear canal and ear drum. We use a special video Otoscope that connects to a screen where you can see in your ears at the same time the audiologist. This way they can explain what they see, helping you to make sense of how we hear and the importance of your hearing, and your ear health in general. Following this, a middle ear pressure test, known as tympanometry, will then be performed to ensure there is no middle ear pathology or blockages. After this, pure tone audiometry is conducted to evaluate the sensitivity of your hearing. As part of our detailed process, we take the time to assess your unique ability to hear speech in the presence of background noise as well.

hearingtestOnce the hearing assessment is complete, these results are plotted on graph called an audiogram and a report is generated for you and your referring doctor or specialist.

Your audiologist will bring together all the tests as well as your challenges and concerns you mentioned, to help you understand why your hearing loss is affecting you in the way it does.

By completing this comprehensive assessment, we gain a complete understanding of the impact that your hearing loss has on you and others, the physical dimensions of your hearing, as well as your potential for improved hearing in quiet and in noise. This gives our audiologists a very clear perspective on your best course of action; whether it be to wait, to be referred for medical intervention or to consider hearing aids.
