More typical hearing loss pattern is high frequency loss, as they are the hair cells that do the most work and are the ones which die off first.
It’s one of the reasons many people complain about not being hearing girls and women’s voices. However it is possible for people who have low frequency hearing loss. This is called reverse slope hearing loss because it is the opposite of most peoples’ experience.
What causes low frequency hearing loss. There are a couple of different reasons. One is a medical cause, a genetic condition called Wolfram Syndrome is also associated with childhood diabetes among other conditions.
Low frequency hearing loss is more commonly associated with conductive hearing loss, which is a problem of the outer or middle ear that prevents the transfer of sound waves along the auditory pathway.
People who have low frequency hearing report having difficulty hearing conversations in noisy environments.
Fortunately, modern hearing aids can cope easily with this form of hearing loss.
The precise nature of your hearing loss needs to be determined by an audiologist after a comprehensive hearing assessment including a speech-in-noise component.
