The Importance of Giving your Ears a Break this Christmas

4Every individual should be protecting themselves from loud sounds as to not do permanent damage to their hearing. This means celebrating with safe sound levels.

We are at risk of permanently damaging our hearing when the intensity of sound reaches 85 decibels. Most entertainment venues in Australia exceed this level, and at close range fireworks can be between 150 and 175 decibels, being well and truly above a safe level for your hearing.

In these loud and noisy situations, limit your exposure time and take breaks from the loud sound as often as you can. Additionally, if you want to position yourself in a safer sound level area of a venue, you can use a sound level metre application.

Safe Hearing & Sound Levels

Apple watches have built in applications called ‘Noise’ that you can put on your watch which will measure the noise level around you and tell you how safe that level of sound is to be listening to and for how long.

If you do not have an apple watch, you can also download apps such as Decibel Pro: Sound Level Meter or Decibel X to give you a good indication of how loud your environment is. These portal applications are typically not as accurate as a calibrated sound level meter used by professionals, but they can give you a better understanding of how loud sounds are around you and how long you should be in that level of noise before you do permanent damage to your hearing.

Other than sound level meters, there are other ways you can protect your hearing this festive season.

  • Wear earplugs when attending Christmas concerts, including fireworks
  • Keep the volume at safe levels on portable music devices when listening to Christmas tunes
  • Take a walk outside of your event venue not only for some fresh air, but to give your ears a break

Better hearing allows you to connect and communicate with friends and family. It is important to protect your hearing and seek support from an independent audiologist if you are concerned about your ears or hearing. Contact Value Hearing with any questions you may have, or book an appointment.
