There’s the old joke about the song and dance many people do before leaving the house. To the tune of the children’s song, ‘head, shoulders, knees and toes’, adults sing ‘wallet, glasses, keys and phone’.

When you’re wearing hearing aids, you need to squeeze in one more word to the lyrics --  ‘wallet, glasses, keys, phone and ‘aids’.

Your hearing aids are powerful devices but they are small, so they need a little mindful attention.

Before you head and enjoy your day, we’ve got some handy tips on how to make the most of your hearing aids when you’re out and about.

More power to you!

Be diligent about putting your hearing aids on charge at the end of each day, but even if you’ve forgotten, take the time to give them at least an hour’s charge before leaving home. We even know of some people who keep a battery charging station in the car to provide power on the go.

If you have battery hearing aids, always keep a spare set on hand for those extra busy days that are demanding on your hearing.

Take advantage of Telecoil

If you have hearing aids with telecoils installed, you have an advantage. Large venues such as churches, cinemas, concert halls, train stations and some public transport have hearing loops which means the sound you want to hear is streamed directly into your hearing aid.

Do you know the history of telecoil? We have an article on it here.

Whatever the weather

Your hearing aids go wherever you go, and there is plenty you can do to protect your hearing aids from the extremes of weather.

Just a little bit of preparation before you head out will keep you hearing your best all day long.

Get Kitted Out

Just as you might keep your glasses case with you when you’re away from home, be sure to keep your hearing aid case with you too. The little case that came with your hearing aids is the perfect place to store a cleaning cloth and a little brush to clean and dry your aids on the go.

Tag! You’re It!

Many modern hearing aids have a wonderful feature called geotagging. This means you can tailor your hearing experience in different locations - your favourite cafe, the shopping centre - by using the hearing aid app on your phone and saving the settings to that location.

That means the next time you pop in for a cappuccino, your hearing aids will automatically go to your preferred setting.

Another advantage of this new technology is should you misplace your aids, you can use the app to find where they are.
