Sister companies, Phonak and Unitron have released a revolutionary new chipset, that is changing the way we hear. It is found in Phonak’s V range of instruments as well as Unitron’s Moxi North and Stride ranges.
The new chipset is truly market leading in being one of the fastest, if not the fastest, hearing aid chips out there at 553 Million Operations per second, while also having one of the largest input ranges in any hearing aid available today. This fast speed means much smoother operation with the ability to use 480 classifiers to identify exactly the situation the user is finding themselves in, while making quick adjustments to optimise speech in these varying conditions. With its relatively large memory, these two manufacturers also have lots of storage to add the latest hearing improvement algorithms (software), to further enhance performance.
The benefit of a large input range should not be sniffed at as it opens up a new world of Sound Quality, rarely experienced in digital hearing aids. In one study, Phonak was rated as one of the best performers in music due to this new chip, sharing this space with the previous leader in this arena, Widex. This is a big step up from their previous generation chip, the Quest which is still found in the Phonak Brio and Q range, which was rated as one of the worst for music.
The input range of a hearing instrument is the difference in decibel between the softest sound the instrument can pick up and the loudest sound before distortion occurs. In the older chipset this range was a measly 85dB. Compare this to a normal ear, which has a dynamic range of around 110dB – keeping in mind these are logarithmic scales. The new chip has a input range of 101dB. This is only surpassed by Widex (Unique - 108dB) and Starkey (Synergy - 110dB).
To top it off, this chip is one of the few truly Dual Core hearing aid Amplifiers available today. This allows it to have one core dedicated to incoming sound and another to output. This means more efficient processing of sound for better overall performance.
What does this all this technical jargon mean to me?
Good Question – and one I believe many hearing care providers fail to realise as well.
It means MUCH improved sound quality and audibility especially in loud environments and better performance with softer speech. So no more squishing together of speech and noise in loud environments like previous generations and better pick-up of soft speech. And all of this is now achievable while enjoying all the benefit of the premium features offered by the world’s largest Hearing aid manufacturer.
